A red giant will be several hundred times the size of the star that formed it. When the Sun becomes one, it will envelop all of the inner planets – probably including Earth.
When a high-mass star reaches the same stage, it becomes a red supergiant. This is the same as a red giant, but much bigger. Yes, really.
